The American Heart Association has just published new guidance Lipoprotein (a)
Some people are just unlucky. They have high levels of something called Lipoprotein (a) or “little” a.
If so, they may have a higher chance than average of having a heart attack or stroke. We cannot do anything about this little monster itself, because it is determined by our genes. However, we can lower our risk my lowering all the other modifiable things like sugar, pressure and bad cholesterol. We can stop smoking and increase exercise.
Everyone should be tested for Lipoprotein (a) once in their lifetime. If you or your family members have a history of heart attacks at an early age, or familial hyperlipidemia, you especially should get tested. It is also associated with Calcific aortic valve disease. Life stages like pregnancy and Menopause can also affect Lipoprotein (a). Certain medical conditions like kidney, liver and thyroid disease can also play a role.
One in five people have high Lipoprotein (a), and because it causes no symptoms they will never know unless they have this simple blood test
You do not even have to be fasted to check your levels, unless you are also checking for your Cholesterol too. If you would like to book a blood test, then please call us on 221-3983 or what’s app 383-1124. or book at Make An Appointment | Ames Medical Services Trinidad
